Why have I made this Website?
I originally built this website to track my progress in building a Mustang-II aircraft, and since I've now swapped to building a Sonex it seems appropriate to use my Mustang website as the basis for this one. My original reasons for making a site at all are explained below (text from original site): Well, for one, I hadn't really made a decent website before and this seemed like a good excuse to learn a bit about how to do it! Secondly, I thought this site could double as my builders log, being a record of the construction etc. But mostly, even though there are many other builder's sites out there (especially RV-4/6/8 ones!), they didn't really show me what I wanted to know as an absolute raw beginner. I mean, what on earth did all those weird rivet codes like AN426-3 mean? What steps were actually involved in building, say, an aileron? What tools do you really need? How do people this, that, and all the other things I had no idea about? Many of the other websites I found had lots of pictures of the construction, but they were mostly of large completed assemblies, and there were very few pictures of how the builder had got to that point in the process. I realise now that a lot of this information is obtained by visiting other builders, watching how they do things and by asking lots of questions! There are also books - such as "Aircraft Sheet Metal" - which are extremely helpful and explain rivet codes, drill sizes, allowable edge distances and many other things which help to clear the fog of confusion from a budding builder's mind. There is so much information in books like this that I am not going to try and present it all on this site. You simply have to get a book. And read it. Hopefully this site does, however, show some of the thought and decision making that went into choosing to build a Sonex (after initially starting a Mustang-II!), and provide the raw-beginner with a rough idea of the tools, steps and effort involved in bringing an airplane to life. |
